Battles in China Battles in America
The Pingdu Campaign (平度战役) started
on September 7, 1945. The battle was one of the Chinese Civil War in the
immediate post World War II era, and resulted in victory for the Communist
Party of China. (Pingdu Campaign, 2013)
The result—the city fell to the hands of Communists, who succeeded in capturing over four thousand rifles, nearly a hundred machine guns, six mortars, sixteen infantry artilleries, over a hundred twelve thousand rounds of ammunitions and over a hundred fifty war horses. Siping Campaign (四平战役) was a nine month long struggle between the communist and the nationalist for Siping in Jilin, China during the Chinese Civil War in the post World War II era, and resulted in communist victory. By the early June 1947, the communists had successfully isolated Siping (city) in their Summer Offensive of 1947 in Northeast China, the communists decided to take the city. (Siping Campaign, 2013) The result —Nationalist lost the city and over 35,000 troops. In addition to capturing the city, the Communist also captured enormous supplies from the nationalists. Huaihai battle(淮海戰役)(November 6, 1948 – January 10, 1949) was a military action during 1948 and 1949 that was the determining battle of the Chinese Civil War. It was one of the few conventional battles of the war. About 550,000 troops of the Kuomintang were surrounded in Xuzhou and destroyed by the communist People's Liberation Army (PLA). This campaign is one of the three campaigns that marked the end of Kuomintang dominance in northern China, the other two campaigns being Liaoshen Campaign and Pingjin Campaign. (Lanning, 2005) The result—Chiang’s position in the ROC government was greatly weakened and was forced to resign 11 days after the campaign. The military strength of the communists was now dominant in North and Central China, and poised to conquer the entire country. Chiang and his government lost mainland China because of corruption, incompetence, and utter ignorance of the countryside (Wright, 2001).The American government under President Harry S. Truman completely lost faith in the corrupt ROC government, therefore refused to give any further military and financial aid, and hastened the collapse of ROC regime on the mainland. |
Fort Sumter battle (April 12, 1861) — With secession, several federal forts, including Fort Sumter in South Carolina, suddenly became outposts in a foreign land. Abraham Lincoln made the decision to send fresh supplies to the beleaguered garrisons. On April 12, 1861, Confederate warships turned back the supply convoy to Fort Sumter and opened a 34-hour bombardment on the stronghold. The garrison surrendered on April 14. The Civil War was now underway. On April 15, Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to join the Northern army. Unwilling to contribute troops, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee dissolved their ties to the federal government. The Battle of
Antietam was fought on
Wednesday, September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek,
as part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American
Civil War to take place on Union soil. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in
American history, with 22,717 dead, wounded, and missing on both sides
combined.[The result—The Union had 12,401 casualties with
2,108 dead. Confederate casualties were 10,318 with 1,546 dead. Several generals
died as a result of the battle. On the morning of September 18, Lee's army prepared
to defend against a Federal assault that never came. After an improvised truce
for both sides to recover and exchange their wounded, Lee's forces began
withdrawing across the Potomac that evening to return to Virginia (Battle of Antietam, 2013). Listen to the story by clicking here.
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania between Union and Confederate forces. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point. Union Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's invasion of the North. (Battle of Gettysburg, 2013) |
